Science Pub Portland: Measuring the Taste of Beer

With Dana Garves, chemist, owner of Oregon BrewLab.

May 21, 7-9PM | Doors @ 6PM | Advance tickets recommended; $5 suggested donation

Measuring the Taste of Beer dives into the science of assessing beer quality, by examining it through the lens of the drinker. We’ll explore the main beer ingredients and how the science behind those ingredients play a role in the sensory experience of the final product. This easy-to-follow talk uncaps the secrets behind what makes a great pint and how drinkers can navigate the vast world of craft beer.

Dana Garves received her Chemistry degree from the University of Oregon in 2010, and jumped right into testing water quality for her first post graduation job. Feeling unfulfilled by water QC, Garves set her sights on the beer industry and joined local Eugene beer giant, Ninkasi Brewing Company in 2011. She started providing Oregon Brewers with free alcohol and bitterness analysis while building the quality control laboratory and sensory program at Ninkasi. Recognizing that free science was unsustainable, and affordable science was in rare supply, Garves created Oregon BrewLab in 2014 – a beer lab dedicated to providing fast and accurate testing for brewers and homebrewers. Since 2014 Oregon BrewLab has removed the cost barrier and headache of beverage analysis for over 600 breweries nationwide.
