Overview

The Mezz is a safe out-of-school spot just for ages 13-18, where you can create alongside mentors and other teens to explore your own ideas, develop skills, and express yourself through technology. The Mezz is an inclusive space for teens at OMSI. It offers teens 13-18 the opportunity to explore their interests through collaboration with experienced mentors and peer volunteers. You’ll be able to explore your own ideas, develop skills, and express yourself through technology. You’ll have the opportunity to use equipment like sewing machines, photography equipment, drawing tablets, 3D printers, computers, a sound booth, musical instruments, and many more to facilitate your STEAM interests

Hearing the Beat of a Different Drum?

Play with a variety of instruments, including guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, DJ station, beatmaking, and more. Then mix and record your music in our soundbooth and audio station.

Want to Explore Sewing and Textiles?

We have sewing, embroidery, knitting, and rug tufting machines, along with tons of fabric, yarn, and patterns for you to realize your fashion dreams.

Interested in Design?

Learn your way around the Adobe Creative Suite, or use our 2D and 3D modelling programs to design something to print on our digital cutting machine or 3D printers.

Is museum admission required?

No, museum admission is not required to access The Mezz.
Teens that come to the museum exclusively for The Mezz can bypass the front desk and go straight there. If teens want to explore the rest of the museum, then they must purchase admission.

What types of equipment are available?
  • For music projects, The Mezz has a recording studio with audio production software and hardware including guitars, sample pads, MIDI and regular keyboards, DJ turntables, and more.
    For photography and video projects, a number of high-quality Canon cameras/lenses, lighting, microphones, and other equipment are available.
  • For sewing and textile projects, The Mezz has a dual nozzle 3D printer, a vinyl cutter, t-shirt press, rug tufter, sewing machine, embroidery machine, and button maker.
  • For design projects, The Mezz has multiple Wacom drawing tablets, the full Adobe creative suite on every computer, and other non-tech art supplies.
Are there classes or workshops?

This is designed to be a free-choice, self directed space. Staff are there to help visitors learn the skills they need. There may be drop-in style workshops to introduce new content, but there is never ticketed programming.

Who can access the Mezz?

Everyone ages 13-18 is welcome in The Mezz. Parents, younger siblings, and those outside of this age range are welcome to wait in our lobby area.

Can teens bring equipment out of The Mezz?

Regular visitors may borrow materials on a case-by-case basis, subject to approval by The Mezz Coordinator. Visitors are welcome to bring their own materials/instruments/etc. to use.
