Science Pub Portland: Cosmology with the James Webb Space Telescope

With Dr. James Schombert, cosmologist, Professor of Physics at the University of Oregon.

June 4, 7-9PM | Doors @ 6PM | Advance tickets recommended; $5 suggested donation

The second phase of a golden age for modern cosmology began with the launching of the James Webb Space Telescope last year.  The JWST has met, and exceeded, all its designed capabilities and provides a window back into the very beginning of the Universe. The JWST allows us to study the era of galaxy formation, where the first generation of stars and planets are produced.  We can now study back tens of billions of years to watch the structure and contents of the Universe form.  In addition, near our Solar System, JWST will find new stars with planets, many having the same characteristics as the Earth.

Prof. Schombert is an observational astronomer whose research centers around galaxy evolution and formation, as well as topics in cosmology. His recent efforts have involved the discovery, imaging and spectroscopy of low surface brightness galaxies, and the study of dark matter.

After receiving his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1984, Schombert was a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech and a visiting assistant professor at UMichigan. Before arriving at UOregon in 1996, he was a staff scientist at NASA/Caltech for 6 years, the last two working for the Astrophysics Division of NASA HQ, Washington, D.C.
