Wednesday Oct. 30 - Sunday Nov. 3, 2019 — The spotlight is on bugs and the researchers & organizations that work with them. Explore the diversity of these amazing animals, their connection to us, and what we learn by working with them.

Wed, Oct. 30 | Mosquitos in Multnomah County
In the Exquisite Creatures: Nature Lab | 9:30am-2:00pm

Come learn more about Mosquitos with Multnomah County Vector Control. Participate in hands on activities and demonstrations for all ages! We will show you how Multnomah County Vector Specialists find, categorize and reduce mosquitos in our community.
 

Thurs, Oct. 31 | Walking Sticks with (*for families with children 0-6 only)
In the Science Playground | 11:00am - 1:00pm 

Walking sticks are insects that mimic sticks and leaves. Join OMSI staff  in getting up close with our collection of these fascinating animals.  

 

Fri, Nov. 1 | Warning, I sting! Or do I?
In the Life Lab |  | 10:00am - 1:00pm

Many stinging insects use coloration as a warning signal.  It works so well, that there are several mimics, especially flies. The bee educators from Bee and Bloom will share insight into these fascinating colorations.

 

Sat, Nov. 2 | Explore Arachnids
In the Life Lab | 10:00am - 1:00pm

Scorpions have a reputation for being dangerous and aggressive, but most are not. Discover the secrets of scorpions with the Portland Insectarium! The Portland Insectarium is a pop-up insect museum and zoo exploring art, science, and culture through the world of bugs!

 

Sat, Nov. 2 | The Bees of Oregon
In the Exquisite Creatures: Nature Lab | 11:00am - 3:00pm

Did you know Oregon has over 500 species of bees, including four species that are actively managed in ingenious ways for crop pollination? Come and see these bees up close, learn who they are and some of the weird and wonderful features of their lives. Also learn about the Oregon Bee Project, a statewide initiative to keep Oregon bee-friendly led by Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Agriculture and Oregon Department of Forestry

For centuries, artists have looked to nature for inspiration and subjects to study. Join local artists from Studio Tullia and Shapes in Nature in making your own bug-inspired art!
