Join us at Rooster Rock State Park for the Perseid Meteor Shower!

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is getting ready for its largest star party of the year on Monday, August 12, the Perseid Meteor Shower Watch! Hundreds of star lovers from across the Pacific Northwest will be meeting at Rooster Rock State Park at 9 pm. to watch and enjoy the wonder of the Perseid Meteor Shower. The event, sponsored by OMSI, Rose City Astronomers, and Oregon Parks and Recreations will have telescopes set up for attendees to use. OMSI staff will be presenting informal talks about the meteor shower, constellations, and the summer sky.
The Perseid Meteor Showers are visible throughout the state. If you aren’t able to join us at the party, get away from the city lights and gaze at the sky. Midnight is expected to be the peak time.
On the scheduled day of each OMSI Star Parties, it is suggested that interested visitors check back here for possible weather-related cancellations.

Please arrive before sunset. Purchase a $5 Day-use pass from the entrance booth at the parks. Display permit on dashboard. The event ends at 11:00 pm.
Absolutely!
If you’re planning to visit a local park or campground, there may be dedicated astronomers already there trying to view or take photographs of the night sky. To give everyone a chance to enjoy the darkness, please: arrive before dark if you can, do not leave headlights on after parking, and try to park so that your headlights aren’t aimed at any observing areas. Leaving headlights on while parked can ruin other’s dark-adapted vision or any night sky photography taking place.
Pets are welcome on a leash. Please clean up after your pet.
Camping is NOT allowed at Rooster. Camping areas and cabins are available at Stub Stewart. Camping is not allowed at Hilltop of Stub.
Recommend bringing lawn chairs, blankets, warm clothing, snacks, and water. Bug repellent is always a good idea. Flashlight or smartphone flashlight should be covered with red electrical tape Star maps will be provided along with recommended astronomy apps.
