A message from the President + CEO…

Dear Supporters and Friends,

As we reflect on another year of growth and transformation, I am filled with gratitude for the abundance of support from our community, the dedication of our staff and volunteers, and the resilience of our partners. OMSI continues to flourish, touching more lives in more ways and fostering a healthier Oregon for all.

This year, OMSI showcased incredible exhibits like Orcas: Our Shared Future and Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family, attracting visitors of all ages. Our Community Science Nights were a resounding success. Our new Regional Education program, established in partnership with Eastern Oregon University and GO STEM, provided more than 7,000 rural students with in-depth science learning opportunities, while our traveling programs reached over 120,000 youth in every county in Oregon. We are honored that the Association of Science and

Technology Centers recognized our Spanish-first exhibition, Creatividad silvestre/Wild Creativity, as 2023’s Best New Traveling Exhibition. We are thrilled that the Newsweek Readers’ Choice Awards named OMSI the top science museum in the U.S.

Our investment in access programs has grown, with nearly $1.5 million dedicated to financial aid, discounted admissions, and community engagement. We are proud to have expanded our digital learning platforms, ensuring that OMSI’s resources are available anytime, anywhere. Looking ahead, we are excited to continue this journey with you. Together, we are building a future where OMSI is a cherished resource throughout every stage of life, inspiring curiosity and a love for science in generations to come. Thank you for your unwavering support and partnership in making this vision a reality.

With Gratitude,

OMSI Mission, Vision, & Equity

Mission

Our mission is to inspire curiosity through engaging science learning experiences, foster experimentation and the exchange of ideas, and stimulate informed action.

Vision

OMSI, collaborating with partners, will ignite an education transformation at the intersection of science, technology and design, and weave a thriving innovation district into the fabric of Portland that spreads opportunities across the Northwest.

Equity Statement

OMSI respects, values, and celebrates the unique attributes, characteristics, and perspectives that make each person who they are. We believe that we will be successful in accomplishing our mission and vision when we seek out and respond to diversity of participation, thought, and action. We will work to dismantle barriers to equity and access to the experiences OMSI provides and to create welcoming environments and conditions where all people can reach their full potential. We lead with race.

The Market at Science Playground

When the Portland Children’s Museum closed in 2021, some feared its cherished exhibits would be lost forever. Fortunately, OMSI stepped in to preserve a beloved favorite: the market. In 2023, this delightful experience found a new home in the Science Playground, offering our youngest learners a place to play, pretend grocery shop, and “prepare” meals for their doting caregivers. Here, children can cooperatively practice counting, sorting by color, and developing essential social skills, and parents can learn more about the science of play.

This interactive experience not only provides endless fun but also fosters imagination and curiosity, ensuring that even our littlest visitors find joy and inspiration in learning at OMSI.

Partnership with Hillsboro School District

OMSI has supported schools across the region for more than 80 years, most recently by embedding educators in communities through the Regional Educator Program. Based in Tamarack Elementary School in Hillsboro, an OMSI educator delivers STEAM programming to over 3,100 students in four schools across the district, with plans to expand to eight district schools during the upcoming year. OMSI-led programming includes summer classes, an after school club, and field trips to the museum.

During these, students apply their exhibit design lessons to projects like planning an amusement park and an ocean health exhibit. This collaboration between OMSI and the Hillsboro District deepens programming impact, supports teachers, develops student’s confidence, and inspires a greater engagement in STEAM topics.

Teen Tech Center Intern Spotlight: Ashley Tran

In partnership with SummerWorks, a short-term employment and training program aimed at introducing youth to employers with positive impacts, OMSI hosted a group of interns last year. One of them, Ashley Tran, developed a virtual reality project while interning in
OMSI’s Teen Tech Center. Called “Cybexercise,” users enter a VR space meant to increase accessibility to exercising for individuals with lower body disabilities. The app is almost finished, and she recently developed and launched her own website.

In the process, she helped OMSI learn how to bring VR into the Teen Tech Center. Her
project served as inspiration for other teens while they learned more about programming
VR. OMSI’s Teen Tech Center is accessible ONLY to teens and free of charge. In the
space, they can use technology ranging from sewing machines and button makers to a
recording booth, 3D printer, and computers loaded with a suite of creative development
applications. Mentors are available to help hone skills, but the space is largely self-directed and allows for lots of freedom to create.

Ashley is heading to Vanderbilt this fall and credits OMSI with helping her grow the
confidence and skills for taking risks and exploring her ideas.

Volunteer Spotlight: Ryan Malone

For 16 years, Ryan Malone has inspired visitors and staff at OMSI. Starting as a Rising Star, OMSI’s previous teen volunteer program, Ryan has always enjoyed the Featured Hall’s evolving exhibits, particularly those on dinosaurs, LEGOs, and Exquisite Creatures. A dinosaur fossil collector himself, Ryan is passionate about learning and sharing scientific knowledge, believing it fosters connection and understanding. At OMSI, he values the supportive community and his unique role.

Volunteers

Our volunteers are the science enthusiasts in every part of OMSI, from explaining chemistry phenomena in the labs to welcoming visitors and ensuring a memorable experience for everyone.

Attendees love the “excellent vibes and sense of community,” while listening to scientists who are passionate about both their field of study and sharing their knowledge. One attendee to Pain and the Brain reflected: “Thank you for providing current, up-to-date information about pain. This is very validating for how I communicate with patients about pain and gate theory.” All of OMSI programming strives to support the community while advancing science learning and discovery throughout our lives. 4,827 adults participated in Science Pubs in Portland and Corvallis.

Throughout the year, OMSI hosts a series of Community Science Nights, which center culturally specific audiences and host a wide range of programming and vendors. Developed with community organizations and open to the public, the evenings bring in families, teens, and adults from across the Metro area. Visitors experience everything from drum circles and talks from leading scientists to culturally specific science trivia and bilingual storytime. One participant reflected: “Being in community with other Indigenous folks was good medicine. It made me feel safer and interact with the space in a more comfortable way.”

Pasifika & Asian American, Black, Latin American, and Native American Nights have each attracted over 1,000 guests, filling the museum with live performances, lectures and demos, laser dance parties, and great food and drink.

J.C. Stevens Legacy Society members

The J.C. Stevens Legacy Society honors those who have included OMSI in their estate plans. These donors, like the society’s namesake and OMSI co-founder John Cyprian Stevens, help to ensure OMSI continues to provide engaging science education for generations to come.
