OMSI’s Fourth Annual Studio Ghibli Film Retrospective Opens January 10

01/04/2019

PORTLAND, Ore. (Jan. 3, 2019) – Some of the world’s most beloved animated movies take the spotlight when the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) launches its fourth annual Studio Ghibli Film Retrospective on Jan. 10. The Retrospective runs from Jan. 10-27, and offers screenings of 18 Studio Ghibli films, including popular favorites such as: Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away.

First-time inclusions to this year’s program include:
•    Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki: a 2016 Japanese documentary recently released in the U.S. that covers Miyazaki's attempt to use CGI animation for the first time.
•    Only Yesterday: Isao Takahata's 1991 dramatic ode to nature and an introspective tale of self-realization.
•    The Wind Rises: Miyazaki's 2013 historical biography; the breathtakingly animated story of Japanese aviation engineer Jiro Horikoshi.

Several of this year’s screenings feature introductory talks by special guests:
•    Jan 10: Dr. Ken Ruoff, Director of the Center for Japanese Studies at Portland State University will speak prior to the screening of Grave of the Fireflies
•    Jan 15: Kristen Faurest, Director of the Portland Japanese Garden Training Center discusses the role of My Neighbor Totoro in protecting fragile Japanese landscapes.
•    Jan 22: Dr. Kristyn Vitale of Oregon State University introduces The Cat Returns
•    Jan 24: Roland Gauthier, Executive Producer and Partner at Hinge Digital will speak prior to the screening of Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki.

Over the last 30 years, Japan's Studio Ghibli has established itself as one of the world's finest producers of animated motion pictures. With a reputation for lush visuals, attention to detail and epic storytelling, Studio Ghibli eschewed commercial success to create intelligent, poetic, often fanciful films that embrace family, community and a deep concern for the environment.

OMSI, in partnership with distributor GKIDS, is proud to continue the tradition of offering the Studio Ghibli catalog to Northwest audiences on the Empirical Theater’s giant screen. 2019’s Studio Ghibli Retrospective is presented by Comcast Internet Essentials.

Tickets for all Retrospective screenings are available at the low price of $7 for adults and $6 for youth/seniors. OMSI Members receive a discount on individual tickets and group discounts are also available.
