With Nicholas Famoso, PhD, Paleontology Program Manager and Museum Curator at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, and Colin Deverell, Acting Northwest Regional Director for the National Parks Conservation Association.

About the Lecture

Bringing one of Oregon’s great national parks to you, learn about the incredible paleontological history preserved and studied at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument from its chief paleontologist, Nick Famoso, as the park celebrates its 50th anniversary. In addition, learn from the National Parks Conservation Association about efforts to protect the greater John Day landscape so its remarkable history and natural wonders are preserved for generations to come.

Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region, recommended for ages 10 and over.

About the Speakers

Nicholas Famoso received his bachelors (BS) in geology from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and his masters (MS) in geological sciences and doctorate (PhD) in earth sciences from the University of Oregon. Nick has been the Paleontology Program Manager and Museum Curator at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument since 2016. His research focuses on ungulate evolution, disturbance ecology, and biostratigraphy.

Colin Deverell is the Acting Northwest Regional Director for the National Parks Conservation Association, the national nonpartisan advocacy group for America’s national parks, where he leads efforts to protect parks across Oregon and Washington State. Prior to joining NPCA, Colin studied political science at Oregon State University and spent several years immersed in land use and transportation policy at Metro, the Portland area’s unique regional government.

Are tickets required?

To guarantee a seat at this event, we recommend you purchase your ticket in advance. Please show your ticket at the check-in table in front of the theater upon arrival.

 

We will usually have tickets available at the door. They are first-come, first-served, and admission will remain a suggested donation.

Will food be available for purchase?

Kennedy School Theater has everything from pizza to burgers to popcorn and candy. Food and drink are welcome in the theater. No outside food or drink is allowed.

Do I have to pay for parking?

It is free to park in McMenamins Kennedy School parking lot and there is plenty of free street parking in the neighborhood
