Biomechanics of Running Shoes: Is There an Ideal Shoe?

With Christine Pollard, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Oregon State University

January 14, 2019 | 6-8PM; Doors open @ 5PM | FREE, RSVP Required

Running shoes prevent injury and improve performance. Recent trends in running footwear include the dramatically different minimal and maximal shoes. Minimal running shoes provide little cushioning. Maximal shoes have a highly cushioned midsole. Join OSU-Cascades researcher Christine Pollard when she shares the latest on the influence of shoe styles on our legs, knees, and ankles. Her work may help you better choose your ideal running shoe.

Christine Pollard, the director of the Functional Orthopedic Research Center of Excellence (FORCE) Laboratory at Oregon State University-Cascades will be presenting on the peculiar findings the FORCE Lab team unearthed as regards HOKA ONE ONE maximal running shoes. The FORCE Lab has now twice found that maximal shoes actually provide less functional cushioning than traditional running shoes. Could too much of a good thing be bad for runners? If runners love their HOKAs, then the answer might be a resounding no, but if they hate them, the FORCE Lab’s next study might show why.

The Science Pub presentation is free and open to the public.
