In the year 10191, a spice called melange found only on the desert planet Arrakis is the most valuable substance in the universe. A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides and ousts his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens. However, when the Harkonnens violently seize back their fiefdom, it is up to Duke Leto's son Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) to lead the Fremen, the natives of Arrakis, in a battle for control of the planet and its spice.
Based on Frank Herbert's classic science fiction epic of the same name, Dune was written and directed by David Lynch and featured a well-known cast, including Jose Ferrer, Max Von Sydow, Oscar® winner Linda Hunt and rock legend, Sting. The film's soundtrack was composed by the rock band Toto and Brian Eno.
On its release in 1984, Dune flopped financially -- grossing only $31 million from a $40 million budget --and was savaged by critics. Lynch quickly distanced himself from the picture, claiming that pressure from both producers and financiers restrained his artistic control and denied him final cut privilege.
Time has been more kind to the film which has gained something of a cult status. Indeed, the film is listed at a lofty #57 on Time Out's list of the Best Sci Fi Movies where critic Tom Huddleston writes "How a movie this dense, allusive, thematically complex, ridiculously pricey and just downright weird ever got made is impossible to imagine, but thank the Maker that it did."
