About the lecture

What would a major Cascadia earthquake and tsunami mean for our communities—and how can we prepare now? Join Oregon State University experts Jenna Tilt and Felicia Olmeta Schult for an engaging lecture & Q&A session about the science, risks, and human dimensions of Cascadia’s most significant natural hazards. Drawing on research and on-the-ground community work, they’ll explore how earthquakes and tsunamis impact people and places, what resilience really looks like, and the practical steps individuals and communities can take to turn fault lines into lifelines. Come for the science, stay for the strategies—and leave better prepared for what lies beneath and beyond our coast.

Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region, recommended for ages 10 and over.

This Science Pub is a part of Hillsboro Reads. The community read is Emma Pattee’s Tilt.

Jenna H. Tilt, PhD, Associate Professor of Geography in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at OSU

Jenna H. Tilt, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Geography and Environmental Sciences unit of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, where she studies the human dimensions of natural hazards, disaster recovery, adaptation, and community resilience. Her research emphasizes equitable, community-engaged approaches to understanding how natural and built systems shape the impacts of disasters and how communities can prepare for and adapt to chronic and acute hazards. Dr. Tilt’s work integrates participatory GIS and mixed-methods research with diverse collaborators to support resilient land use and hazard planning. She teaches courses in sustainable land use planning and resilient community planning and is involved in several interdisciplinary research projects including the Cascadia Coastlines and Peoples Hazards Research Hub and wildfire recovery research initiatives. Dr. Tilt earned her Ph.D. in Social Sciences with a certificate in Urban Ecology from the University of Washington and holds an M.S. in Social Sciences and a B.S. in Environmental History.

Felicia Olmeta Schult, PhD, Assistant Professor of Practice in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at OSU

Felicia Olmeta Schult, PhD is Assistant Professor of Practice in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University and the Oregon Sea Grant Extension Coastal Hazards Specialist. She works with community partners across Oregon to enhance resilience to climate change and coastal natural hazards—including erosion, flooding, earthquakes, and tsunamis—by connecting research with practical preparedness and planning efforts. Prior to her current role, she served as an Oregon Sea Grant Resilience Fellow, where she developed the Oregon Coastal Hazards Ready Library and Mapper to support community hazard awareness and adaptation. Dr. Olmeta Schult holds a B.S. in Oceanography from Hawaii Pacific University, an M.A. in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, and a Ph.D. in Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences from Washington State University. Originally from Corsica in the Mediterranean, she brings interdisciplinary expertise to public service, science communication, and coastal resilience education.
