A lecture on the question of life beyond Earth and Fermi’s paradox.
With Dr. James Schombert, Observational Astronomer, Professor of Physics at UO.
About the lecture
The discovery of thousands of exoplanets in orbit around nearby star systems has re-opened an old question for stellar astronomy, do any of those star systems contain habitable planets, and do any of those planets contain civilizations. Known as Fermi’s paradox, its solution is relevant to the very survival of our own planet.
Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region, recommended for ages 10 and over.

About the Speaker
Professor Schombert is an observational astronomer whose research centers around galaxy evolution and formation, as well as topics in cosmology. His recent efforts have involved the discovery, imaging and spectroscopy of low surface brightness galaxies, and the study of dark matter. After receiving his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1984, Schombert was a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech and a visiting assistant professor at UMichigan. Before arriving at UOregon in 1996, he was a staff scientist at NASA/Caltech for 6 years, the last two working for the Astrophysics Division of NASA HQ, Washington, D.C. His career goal is to become a philosopher-king and to evolve beyond the need for a material body.
