Science Pub Portland: The Anatomy of an Oregon Heat Wave
The Anatomy of an Oregon Heat Wave
with Paul Loikith, PhD, Associate Professor of weather and climate science in the Department of Geography at Portland State.
MAR 7, 7-9PM | Doors @ 6PM | Advance tickets recommended; $5 suggested donation
Heat waves are driven by a complex set of meteorological drivers in Oregon. We will uncover what atmospheric configurations give us extreme heat in the summer and why this configuration makes it so hot. We will also take a closer look at the June 2021 mega heatwave and what made it so much more severe than any in recorded history. Finally we will look at what the state of the science says about the future of heat waves in Oregon.
Dr. Paul Loikith is an Associate Professor of weather and climate science in the Department of Geography at Portland State. He is the director of the Portland State Climate Science Lab, a research and teaching lab focused on a range of topics related to the physical drivers of weather and climate variability and climate change. Dr. Loikith has a B.S. in Meteorology and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science at Rutgers University.
