OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS

Teachers inspire wonder in their students every day. But how do teachers stay inspired? OMSI professional development workshops combine hands-on activities with plenty of take-back-to-the-classroom content.

Summer Science Institutes For Teachers

Workshops to stimulate your creativity, including No-Hassle Messy Science with a Wow!, an aquatic field study on the Oregon coast, and others. Offered for a week in June and a week in August. Register for individual workshops or a whole week’s worth. 2010 schedule will be available on March 1, 2010. or call  503.797.4661 for more information.

Distance Learning Opportunities

Transportation costs got you feeling remote and out of touch? Interactive videoconference (IVC) could be the solution! OMSI offers a variety of IVC programming ranging from professional development workshops to standards-aligned classroom programs. If your school district is equipped for IVC, and most are, then there are lots of possibilities for distance learning. Contact Program Sales and Registration at  503.797.4661 or visit www.cilc.org  (keyword: OMSI) for information and a complete listing of distance learning opportunities.

Curriculum for Teachers

Expedition Northwest is a curriculum designed by OMSI educators that provides exciting standards-based science activities for grades 4–8. The program focuses on how water connects landscapes, people, and ecosystems across the region—from glaciers to rivers to oceans; from ancient floods to power generation. Program includes digital labs, online sharing of data, and teacher message boards.

No Hassle Messy Science with a Wow: Chemistry for the K-8 Classroom serves as an aid for teachers bringing chemistry to their elementary and middle school students. Together with the workshop of the same name, it has brought science education to diverse audiences. Teachers, both nationally and internationally, have used this curriculum to inspire wonder in their students.
